If you’ve been researching automation tools, you’ve almost certainly come across Zapier, and if you work in a browser, you may have found Agentic Workflow. Both promise to save you time by automating repetitive tasks. But they work in very different ways, target different problems, and suit different kinds of users.
This article sets out the real difference between the two, not in marketing terms but in terms of how they work, where each one excels, and how to decide which fits your situation.
If an app has no Zapier integration, it can't be automated.
If you can open it in a browser, a workflow can read it, click it and fill it, signed in as you.
Flip it. The browser is an automation surface too.A browser extension acts on the rendered page in your own session, with per-site access you approve.

How each tool works
How Zapier works
Zapier is a cloud automation platform that connects apps through their APIs. You build Zaps: automations that start when something happens in one app (an email arrives in Gmail) and do something in another (a row is added in Google Sheets).
The key word is API. Zapier calls each connected service’s API from its cloud, so the tools you automate need a Zapier integration (it lists more than 8,000 apps), and the Zaps run on Zapier’s servers, not on your machine.
- Trigger: an event in app A (new email, form submission, Slack message)
- Action: a response in app B (create a record, send a message, update a sheet)
- Runs in: Zapier’s cloud, around the clock, without you being online
How Agentic Workflow works
Agentic Workflow is a browser extension that automates tasks inside your browser. Instead of connecting app APIs on a server, it works with the pages you are already visiting: reading their content, filling forms, clicking buttons and putting AI results right where you need them.
There’s no cloud in the middle in local mode. The automation runs in your browser, while it is open, on whatever is in front of you.
- Trigger: you open a page, right-click, press a hotkey, run it from the side panel, or a schedule fires
- Action: the extension reads, processes or acts on the live page
- Runs in: your browser; no server, and no API key when you use a local model
Agentic Workflow works on the page itself, in your browser. No API needed for the page; it runs while the browser is open.

Where each tool excels
Zapier is the right choice when:
- Your automations must run 24/7 with every laptop closed
- You mostly connect cloud apps to each other (CRM → email → Slack)
- You need an app only Zapier connects to
- Your team needs shared workspaces and admin controls
Agentic Workflow is the right choice when:
- The work happens on web pages, including ones behind your login or with no API
- You need AI to act on the page you’re viewing: summarising, extracting, rewriting
- You want AI that runs on your own device, free and private
- You want to start in a minute, without accounts or a per-task bill

Use both
The honest answer: they solve different problems, and many people benefit from both. Use Zapier to keep cloud apps in sync in the background. Use Agentic Workflow for the browser layer: pages without APIs, AI on live content, repetitive in-browser tasks. Let Agentic Workflow do the browser-side part, then send the result to a Zapier webhook trigger with its HTTP Request node; Zapier carries on in the cloud.
